I was convinced in Liberia in 2003/4 that 50 cent could have been president there if he had wanted to be. His picture was on every phone stall, taxi, marketplace throughout that country.

recently during some field research in the Niger Delta I saw evidence of this as well – some of the 'boys' in the creeks that partake in politically and criminally motivated violence in the region have adopted a mixture of mafia and US-rap personalities and titles.

Sudanese normally shout “Khawaja!” (foreigner) at me and my friends in the street. Except for the guy with dreadlocks. Who, yes, generally gets called “Nigga!” wherever he goes.
