Forgive more geriatric stirring about a subject i know very little about, but, well, presumably McChrystal was appointed because of his confidence and candour - so perhaps his reflections can be taken in that light, ie, helpful feedback?

more important is whether the coin strategy is working.

seems to me that a careful distinction needs to be drawn between what "upsets" civilians and what physically harms them or the soldiers. the latter, i would argue needs to be focused on. it may be unpopular, but i believe people co-operate more with strategies that are recognised as including consistent, understandable measures to protect their physical welfare. perhaps cultural/social considerations will have to be eschewed more.

from an employer's perspective, it may be that McChrystal could do with a break (ie holiday) ...
