I seems to me that the upswing coincides with the general increase in FUD (fear, uncertainty, doubt) being sown by those with a vested interest in the status quo. Combine this with a confirmation bias in the choice of information sources and you have a hardening of opinion among those already convinced global warming is bogus and a swaying of those that are indecisive.

The world should understand that the American educational system does not explicitly encourage (and thereby implicitly discourages) critical thinking skills. This limits the quality of the arguments that can be brought forth in public forums. It will always be difficult to convince people when they lack the skills to evaluate the information properly.

General worry about climate change has also increased over that time. So the graph is totally consistent with more republicans believing in climate change (just less than the liberal media want them to). Think of it as the Bjorn Lomborg position: the climate is changing, but it isn't quite as bad as you think.

Oh sorry- glanced at the title "Ready to be depressed?", the word "climate change" and the graph (before fully reading the explanation).

I THOUGHT that you might be showing a graph showing persistent global temperature rise over this 10 year period.

Could you please show (graphical representation would be helpful) the statistics supporting the occurrence of "global warming" over this period- and include irrefutable, scientific evidence (a few decent references should suffice).

A graph of temperature vs time should have the same general appearance, I would imagine. No?

In an attempt to stave off the depression caused by this survey, I'm interested by that upward blip in 2004. Any idea what it might be caused by?
