If pensions apartheid is in common use, it's because IOD policy advisor, Corin Taylor, has been pushing it for many years. I don't know if he was the first to use the term, but he is certainly one of its biggest champions.

As well as advising the IOD and writing their recent pensions report, Taylor also works for Taypayers' Alliance, which <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/7241315.stm" rel="nofollow">specialises</a> in "packaging" stories of government waste into "brief, media-friendly research papers, complete with an eye-catching headline figure to give reporters a ready-made 'top line'."

Taxpayers Alliance 'flies kites' for the Conservative Party, according to its Director, which explains David Cameron's use of the term.

"Apartheid," it seems, is just sexy packaging for Taylor, Cameron, the Taxpayers Alliance and - of course - the IOD.

We're far from the first people to use the term "pensions apartheid".
To give just two examples, David Cameron used the term last November, saying that "we have got to end the apartheid in pensions". http://www.cipd.co.uk/news/_articles/cameron-vows-action-on-pensions-apartheid.htm
And Mary Dejevsky also referred to it in the Independent in December. http://www.independent.co.uk/opinion/commentators/mary-dejevsky/mary-dejevsky-im-a-pensions-apartheid-victim-and-there-is-no-excuse-for-it-1058039.html
A simple google search will come up with the term hundreds of times.

We don't think that using this term undermines the significance of the awful suffering in apartheid South Africa. If you disagree with us, fair enough, but then you ought to at least acknowledge that the term "pensions apartheid" is in pretty common use.

It would also be interesting to hear your views on the substance of the report. Proper debate is always more interesting than sniping.
