The circumstance of 'poverty' involves much more than a simple calculation of income. Inadequate or nonexistent access to natural resources, increased vulnerability to natural phenomena which can quickly become disastrous, lack of voice in the political framework, and limited opportunity to secure a sustainable livelihood are all indicators of a substandard quality of life. To address these issues requires a cross-sector approach, one which has been steadily gaining attention and support within the international aid community over the past few years. An institute on the forefront of this movement is the Environmental Change and Security Program at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, a non-partisan, non-advocacy, research institute in Washington, D.C. ECSP's website offers a host of resources for those looking for further information about this emerging sea change in the development community, and its New Security Beat blog is particularly useful, as it highlights current events through this lens.
